Dr. James Mutua.
Career Overview
Dr. James Mutua is an early career researcher who is currently actively involved in
numerous researches.
He is a specialist in Materials Engineering, Additive
manufacturing, Design &Production, Recycling, and Lightweight materials.
Current research includes:
Composite material development, High performance materials engineering, Computational Materials Modelling, Recycling of waste plastics, and additive manufacture of metal materials and biomedical materials for Medicare.
He serves as the Chief Investigator who sphere heads the section in new material development, recycling of plastics and additive manufacturing of bio based energy devices.
He also serve as the key supervisor and mentor to all the postgraduate students and Junior staff involved in the research.
In addition, he is responsible for continuous monitoring and progress presentation to the Africa-ai-Japan Project Phase 2 research and innovation grants office.
Concurrently serves as:
Lecturer Department of Mechanical Engineering, SOMMME, COETEC
Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
Activities and Responsibilities
- Thematic leader of Team 1 who oversees Materials redesign, recycling, and additive manufacture of energy related devices.
- Lead and coordinate all the scientific and financial reporting for all nano bio based waste plastic material development and Additive manufacturing issues.>
- Plays advisory role in Additive manufacturing to the rest of the Research teams.
- Supervises postgraduate students in thematic area.
- Consistently prepare and update project plan according to objectives.
- Obtain, distribute and manage all project funding for the various thematic areas as per budget.
- Co-ordinate regular meetings, assess and report progress
- Link the team with industry team and other stakeholders for realistic project outcomes
- Mediate and resolve any conflicts within the project.

Dr. Japheth Obiko

Dr. Japheth Obiko (an expert in Metal Additive Manufacturing and Material

Dr Obiko has a PhD from the School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering,
University
of the Witwatersrand-Johannesburg, South Africa obtained in 2021.
He
received an MSc
in
Mechanical Engineering from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and
Technology in
2015 and BSc (Mechanical Engineering) from Jomo Kenyatta University of
Agriculture and
Technology, Kenya in 2012.
He is a registered graduate engineer with the
Engineers
Board
of Kenya.
He is currently involved in different research topics focusing in areas of metal
forming
processes, welding metallurgy, material characterisation and alloy design and
thermodynamic analysis.
He is also interested in both advanced and
conventional
machining processes of novel materials.
He is also interested in the
application of
Industry 4.0 technologies on welding and metal forming processes.
He has
published
several peer-reviewed articles in journals, book chapters and conferences.
He guides
and
mentors several undergraduate and postgraduate students in their research
projects.
Dr Obiko is passionate about the adoption of Industry 4.0 in African
manufacturing
systems and as such, he is working towards expanding his research networks and
experience in this topic.
He hopes to achieve this by working with various
research
groups around Africa/the world and fostering academia-industry relationships.
